Brigadier General Thierry Blanc graduated from the French Air Force Academy in 1989 as an intelligence officer. He obtained a degree in aeronautics engineering in 1991, and in September 1997, he joined the Aeronautics and Space Institute (ISAé -Supaéro) in Toulouse and graduated with an engineering degree in 1999. He took advantage of this training period to get business administration, consulting and finance skills and obtained a master’s degree in Business Engineering. Then, he graduated from the War College in 2005, attending the Joint Services Command and Staff College in Great Britain.
His first assignment was in Metz in 1993, where he served as Chief of the Technical Section and later as the Head of the Theatre Intelligence Support Sections of the Air Intelligence Support and Training Squadron (ESERA 12.054). In 1999, he was assigned to the Helios Command and Control Ground Segment at the National Space Agency (CNES). He was the senior representative of the Hélios System Director at CNES. He also got involved in the design of future military space systems.
In 2002, he joined the “National Security Council” (SGDSN) to provide a synthesis of scientific and strategic information related to space and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), and he contributed as an expert to the “sensitive goods” exportation process (military assets, sensitive technologies). Brigadier General Blanc joined the command-control-communication-intelligence division of the Air Force General Staff Office and was in charge of numerous conceptual and doctrinal documents in 2006. In September 2008, he was posted to the Military Satellites Center (CMOS), where he served as Commander. At the head of this joint and multi-national organisation, he was responsible for commissioning many space systems, including Helios 2, Pleiades, Cosmo Skymed, Sar Lupe, and PHAROS.
From 2011 to 2015, he was assigned to the Air Defence and Air Operations Command as Deputy Chief of Staff of Training and Evaluation (Head of Branch A7) and then as Air Force ISR and Space Brigade Commander. On July 30, 2015, he was posted as Chief of Joint Staff of the French Forces stationed in the United Arab Emirates, under the command of “ALINDIEN,” which had responsibilities over the Indian Ocean, 15 countries and the National Contingent Commander of French operations in the Levant (Chammal Operation).
In September 2018, he was appointed Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff of the French Joint Space Command. He became Deputy Commander of the new French Space Command in charge of Strategy, Cooperation and Capabilities in September 2019. He kept his role as Chief of Staff, and in September 2021, he was appointed Deputy Space Commander as Brigadier General.
Brigadier General Blanc has participated in numerous operations, including EPERVIER (Chad), CRECERELLE, SALAMANDRE (former Yugoslavia), and HERACLES (Afghanistan).
